Several hundred apparel workers on Thursday evening surrounded the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building in the capital’s Kawran Bazar area demanding their salaries and festival allowances.
Workers of Jockey Garment besieged the BGMEA building and some of its officials since morning as promise to pay their salaries and festival allowances were not kept.
Gias Uddin, a supervisor of Jockey Garment, under the ownership of Opsonin Group, at Mirpur 13, said that the owners of the RMG factory closed it on May 30 saying they would reconstruct the building within 15 days.
However, the factory was then permanently shut down.
They workers then demanded two months’ salaries and festival bonuses.
The director Saiful Islam Pintu promised them to pay their salaries and bonuses on July 16. The dates were then shifted to July 18 and July 24, said Sanowara Begum, an employee of the apparel factory.
Hundreds of workers of the factory came to BGMEA building on Thursday morning but the owners were not there.
Later the angry workers cordoned the building till midnight.
The workers confronted Abu Ahad Ansary, chairman of BGMEA standing committee on labour welfare and education, during the incident.
‘We have been trying to contact the owners but they are not responding,’ said Ahad. He said that the owners closed the factory ‘temporarily’ but later declared it permanently shut, without paying the workers.
Members of police were deployed there to avert any untoward situation, said Selim Mia, inspector (investigation) of Ramna police station.
Earlier on Wednesday, hundreds of workers of Tuba Garments besieged the BGMEA building demanding their salaries and bonuses.
The angry workers laid siege on the building around 11:00am. The owners of Tuba Group are currently in jail over the Tazreen Fashion fire.

  1. This is very unfair practice not to give the salaries and other dues of the workers. Workers work there for salary and if their dues are not given in proper time then where they go. I will urge the factory owners to give their dues as soon as possible.
