Two prime suspects in the murder case of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of superintendent of police Babul Akter, were killed during a ‘gunfight’ with the detectives at Thandachari area under Rangunia of Chittagong early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Islam Rashed, 27, and Nurun Nabi, 28. Rashed was wanted in at least six cases, including three for murder, lodged with Rangunia police station in Chittagong.
The duo were killed only three days after Rashed’s father Ahammad Hossain’s claim in a press conference at Chittagong Press Club that Rashed and Nabi were picked up detectives on June 23 from a house of Millitarir Pool area in the port city.
He had claimed that Rashed and Nabi were closed friends and had been staying at the same house while police picked up them.
Police, however, denied the claim.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s detective Branch assistant commissioner Md Kamruzzaman, also the investigation officer in the case of Mitu murder, said they launched a drive at tipped off that Rashed and Nabi along with his associates were staying in the area, a team of the detectives conducted a drive there to arrest the duo around 3:30am.
As the police team reached near a brick kiln, MBW Brick field, the suspected miscreants, sensing the presence of the law enforcers, opened fire at them, forcing the DB men to fire back that triggered a gun battle.
Rashed and Nabi caught bullets by the fire ‘opened by the miscreants’ and seriously injured while their other associates managed to flee the scene, claimed the CMP assistant commissioner.
He said that the injured were rushed to a local hospital where on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Earlier on June 5, unidentified miscreants gunned down Mitu in the city’s GEC intersection area while she went there to drop her son, Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus to Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.
Police have so far arrested five people in connection with the murder. Of the five, Wasim and Anwar already gave their confessional statements before a Chittagong court where they named both Rashed and Nabi as killers.
