A Dhaka court on Monday fixed April 25 for hearing on the plea for remand of Daily Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed on allegation of plotting to abduct and murder prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Meanwhile, inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque on Monday said that detective branch members entered Shafik Rehman’s house in the guise of journalist as part of strategy.
The IGP made the remarks while talking to the newsmen after attending a programme of the criminology department at Dhaka University.
‘DB police often use different strategies to catch offenders; it might be a part of that,’ he said.
But when the DB men went to Shafik Rehman’s house, they were wearing Detective Branch jackets, he claimed.
He further said that law enforcers arrested journalist Shafik Rehman on specific charges and it had no relation with any other thing.
On Monday, several organisations protested at the arrest of Shafik Rahman and demanded his immediate release.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Golam Nabi fixed the date while Detective Branch of the police sought 10 days to interrogate Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed for plotting to abduct and murder Joy, our court correspondent reports.
The investigation officer of the case, DB senior assistant commissioner Hassan Arafat, submitted the prayer to the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Golam Nabi in the afternoon.
He mentioned in the prayer that Mahmudur might be in the conspiracy to abduct Joy, so he needed to be interrogated.
The IO sought permission from the court to show Mahmudur arrested in the case.
The court fixed April 25 for the hearing in this regard.
On Saturday, senior journalist Shafik Rehman was arrested in the same case and remanded in custody for five days.
Several rights organisations including Ain O Salish Kendra and Sangbidhanik Odhikar Forum on Monday expressed concern about the arrest of Shafik Rehman.
It would be wise to arrest a person with an arrest warrant from a court if adequate and specific proof is there against a person on his or her involvement in an incident, ASK said in a press release.
Sangbidhanik Odhikar Forum demanded immediate release of Shafik Rehman.
Pro-BNP organisation All Community Forum organised a discussion on the day where discussants demanded release of Shafiq Rehman.
‘He was arrested as he tells and writes truth with logic,’ BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said at the discussion.
