Charge hearing against Delwar, wife on July 8

A Dhaka court on Tuesday posted for July 8 the hearing in framing of charges against 13 accused including Tazreen Fashions managing director Delwar Hossain in two cases filed for fire at the apparel factory that killed at least 112 workers.
The Dhaka district and sessions judge, SM Quddus, passed the order taking cognisance of the charge sheets in the cases.
The court also issued warrants for the arrest of ‘fugitive’ accused engineer Mahbubul Morshed, production manager Mobarak Hossain Manju, factory manager Abdur Razzak and quality manager Shahiduzzaman.
The other accused are Delwar’s wife Mahmuda Akhter, also Tazreen Fashions chairperson, manager (admin) Dulal Uddin, store in-charges Hamidul Islam and Al Amin, security in-charges Al Amin and Anisur Rahman, guard Rana and loader Shamim Miah.
At least 112 workers, mostly women, were killed and scores wounded in the country’s worst industrial fire at Tazreen Fashions at Ashulia on November 24, 2012.
On December 22, 2013, Criminal Investigation Department inspector AKM Mohsinuzzaman Khan, also investigation officer of the cases, pressed charges of culpable homicide against the 13.
According to the charge sheets, Delwar and his wife constructed the building on a faulty plan with the help of the engineer, and illegally used the ground-floor walkway as a warehouse.
There was no fire exit in the factory building, although it was mandatory in accordance with the Bangladesh Labour Act, the charge sheets said.
The police filed one of the cases with Ashulia police station accusing 15 staff of killing the workers by negligence.
The second case was filed against Delwar and 30 others on May 29, 2013 with the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court by Abdul Matin, brother of missing worker Rehan.
